If you’ve never visited beautiful Savannah, Ga., or if you would like to rediscover the town from a new perspective, do it on a Segway.
Segway Inc. offers Segway Authorized tours
, which are a great way to get out and explore everything that this scenic and historic city has to offer. Even if you’re planning your trip in the middle of winter, Savannah’s warm southern climate is still mild enough for an enjoyable ride through the city.
During the tour
, you’ll be able to take the city's sights at a leisurely pace. Made up of 22 blocks, Savannah is packed with interesting history and beautiful architecture. On the way, your guide will share stories and trivia about Savannah’s colorful history—including the reason why it was one of the few cities spared in General Sherman’s famous 1864 march through the South. The sights included along the way include St. John the Baptist Cathedral, Mercer House, Armstrong House, the Oglethorpe Statue, and Forsyth Park, among many others.
For those who enjoy their trivia a little more on the macabre side, you’ll get a glimpse of Savannah’s haunted history in the architectural quirks of some of the older homes—these houses regularly built upside-down windows as a way to keep spirits out, and many still have this unusual feature. If that’s not spooky enough for you, you can now take a tour
through Bonaventure Cemetery.
If safety is your main concern, rest assured that you will be in good hands. Before the tour departs you will begin by watching a 15 minute orientation and safety video. After that, you’ll be fitted with a mandatory riding helmet and have a one-on-one Segway rider training to ensure that you’ll be able to safely and easily get on and off, move forward and backward, and make turns. Once you’re done with your training, you’ll be ready to roll.
There are a few options to consider when booking your tour. You can choose to take either the one-hour tour for $45, or the more extensive two-hour tour for $65. If the idea of a more independent tour appeals to you, you may want to take advantage of a self-guided rental. You can explore the town for one hour for $40, a second hour for $30, half a day for $85, a full day for $130, and one week for $425.
Before setting off for your tour, there are some important regulations to keep in mind. Riders must be at least 18 years old, or age 15 and up if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Riders must also weigh between 100 and 260 pounds to ensure personal safety. And finally, you must be able to step on and off of the Segway PT unaided. Once you’re sure that you’re ready for a safe trip, consider what the weather will be like on the day of your tour and dress appropriately and comfortably.
Each Segway PT includes a storage pouch to conveniently store personal items so you can take along your cell phone, keys, and water bottles.
The tour office is located in the Drayton Tower, right in the middle of the historic district of Savannah at the corner of Drayton and Liberty streets.
