, aboard the 65-foot catamaran Rudee Whaler knowing there’s a possibility that today might be the day you spot migrating humpback whales or fin whales.
“It’s always an adventure, and always exciting to get out and enjoy the weather,” says Kelli Norman, director of tourism marketing and sales, Virginia Beach, Va. “And the winter sky is absolutely gorgeous.”
The two-hour journey includes an onboard naturalist from the Aquarium that talks about what’s being seen and what might be seen along the way as everyone scans the horizon for a glimpse of birds, harbor seals, harbor porpoises and more. In additions, artifacts are also provide so that everyone can get a better understanding of the winter visitors who grace the waters around Virginia Beach. Norman adds this touch makes the trip “more interesting.”
The catamaran travels about one or two miles off the coast, depending on what and where has been spotted by fishermen earlier that morning.
If you decide to go, Norman recommends dressing warmly, preferably in layers since it’s typically 10 degrees cooler on the water. The catamaran, which seats up to 250 people, has as an upper and a lower deck for viewing. And if you need a break, there’s a heated indoor cabin in the middle.
While a whale spotting isn’t always guarantee, it’s definitely worth taking a Winter Wildlife Boat Trip.
The Winter Wildlife Boat Trip runs through March 20. Admission is $28/adult, age 12 and older, $24/child, age 4-11; 3 and under are admitted for free. Tickets can be purchased at the Aquarium or Virginia Beach Fishing Center.
