“Guests can expect to experience a remarkable meal in a beautiful, unique setting,” comments Aimee Reed Darnell, publicist, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
, about the Garden-Side Supper
, August 27. “You are sitting outside with the farmer, looking at the historic garden the Shakers themselves used while tasting food harvested hours before.”
Located in Harrodsburg, Ky., the supper, in its second year, begins with a tour of the garden, followed by appetizers and the opportunity to meet the farmer. Then onto the three-course meal, with three wine pairings. Darnell says the supper not only features produce from the garden, but also fresh products from nearby farms.
“The fresher the food, the better the taste.”
She adds it’s a way for everyone to reconnect with history.
“There’s one three-acre garden the Shakers used to grow their crops, and today our farmers use it. They employ many of t
he same old-style techniques.”
“We try to keep everything as authentic as possible. The Shakers were known for the food they grew.”
And preserving history is all what the village is about.
You can discover this (and more) for yourself when you visit the destination property over a long weekend
“It’s such a treasure.” she says. “It has so much to offer families, outdoor fans and adventure-seekers.”
Situated on 3,000-acres of rolling farm land in central Kentucky, the village can be best described as a living history museum
. Here, you can visit the 14 restored Shaker buildings that provide insight into Shaker’s life. There’s also a guided tour through the 40-room Centre Family Dwelling. You’ll have the opportunity to hear Shaker music, and watch craft demonstrations. And that’s just for starters.
When it comes to the outdoors
, there’s a 40-mile trail system in which 13 of them are multi-use and offers challenges for walkers, hikers, bikers and more. You can also go horseback riding or take a carriage ride along the trails
“It’s such a different experience on the trail,” says Darnell. “It’s not what you see everyday.”
There’s ample bird watching
opportunities as well, and seasonal wildflowers in bloom.
Looking to further extend your outdoor time, consider a riverboat ride
through the Kentucky River palisades
“Shaker Village is more than a just, it’s an experience. We want you to take away a feeling of tranquility, peace, and a yearning to return time and time again.”
