What do you get when you combine barbecue, blues and the Mississippi Gulf Coast?
, a Blues and BBQ joint that could be best described as an experience complete with barbecue.
The family-ran (and yes, everyone is involved in some way) destination-slash-restaurant is celebrating its 10th year at the original location in Ocean Springs, Miss.
Brooke Lewis, CFO and co-founder along with brother Brad and Brett Orrison, says it been an interesting, but also (a) good time.
“We’ve been blessed with the opportunity through barbecue competitions to represent the Mississippi Gulf Coast nationwide,” she says. “We mean it. This is a great place to represent and to live.”
She adds while there is an amazing diversity of restaurants along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, she hopes everyone visits The Shed when they are in the area.
“Food is an emotion and it can make people feel good. At The Shed, we add the atmosphere. So when you come here, it’s all about
good food in a good atmosphere – a perfect blend for everyone.”
If it’s your first visit to The Shed, you definitely want to order
the sampler platter, which Lewis says is plenty to feed two people.
“You get a little of seven meats, three sides and sauce. It’s all piled in a little box and finger-lickin’ good, like barbecue should be.”
A note about those sauces; it’s not bragging to say these are one-of-a-kind. Headed up by Craig Orrison, head saucerer and father of The Shed family, along with saucery
plant manager, Rene Patout have developed six different award-winning sauces
to compliment the ‘q. There’s everything from the ShedSpred regular to spicy vinegar to mustard.
“We’ve been entering these sauces in the National Barbecue Association Convention for the past three years, and last year won 19 sauce awards. The year prior, we took home 12,” says Lewis.
“The sauces have two things in common. The first is they are all developed with tendering loving care by The Shed family. They are not mass produced. Second thing is all of the sauces base begin with the ShedSpred.”
And now for The Shed’s joint side, where you’ll discover the beat is always moving.
Strong supporters of the blues community, The Shed will host the 8th-ever ShedHead Blues Festival
on Saturday, August 27 in Ocean Springs.
“We are super-excited about the blues festival. There’s every range of blues playing,” she says. “We have a great line-up this year that also include a mix of local and regional bands as well.”
Beginning at 4 p.m.., you can listen to the sounds of such acts as Emerald Coast Blues Brothers (“as close to seeing the Blues Brother you can find. During this act, there is no way people will stay seated.”), Little Freddie King (“been on the blues circuit for a while and has so many stories to tell.”), Percy Sledge and more, including the end performance, Radio Moscow (“they play a little blues rock that’ll will get the party rockin’.”).
When it comes to selecting the bands, they all voice who they would like to see play at The Shed and from there, Brett Orrison, entertainment director, works to pick the best people and bands that represent their blues in their own way.
If you think you’ve experience it all along the Mississippi Gulf Coast (or another The Shed destinations
), think again. You haven’t found the true spirit of the area until you’ve visited The Shed.
