Southern Hospitality Traveler's Favorite Things About October

What is your favorite thing about October?

Is it pumpkin patches (or pumpkin-spice everything), fall foliage or football games?

And that doesn't even start to scratch the surface of what the South has to offer in October. There are plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy the month.

Here are a few of Southern Hospitality Magazine-Traveler's picks.

  • Oompah Southern Style: Oktoberfest celebrations blanket the South from late September through October. From Hermann, Missouri  (every weekend through Oct. 28) to Cleveland, Mississippi (Oct.11-12) to Helen, Georgia (daily through Oct. 27) to Harrodsburg, Kentucky (Oct. 11-13), no matter where you are in the region, you are more than likely within a close distance to one or two.

Even beach destinations like Port Aransas, Texas (through Oct. 30) and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (Oct. 11-12) get in on the fun as well.

And it isn't limited to towns and cities, either ~ Rock City Gardens on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, hosts Rocktoberfest (Sat. and Sun., through Oct. 27)while Sugar Mountain (N.C.) Resort (Oct. 12-13) offers their version of Oktoberfest.

Each one enables you to enjoy Bavarian-inspired food and drinks along with festivities mixed in with a heaping of southern hospitality.

  • Fall Fun at Theme Parks: With the promise of cooler weather and smaller crowds, fall is a great time to visit theme parks. Add in a seasonal event, and you have the perfect combination for a memorable Saturday or weekend.

Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, puts on Harvest Festival (through Oct. 26) with the brand-new Pumpkin Nights. The Park at OWA in Foley, Alabama, offers the Fall Festival (Fri. and Sat. through Nov. 3.) Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, ushers in the new season with the Harvest Festival (through Nov. 2) that includes Great Pumpkin LumiNights. SeaWorld Orlando hosts a Craft Beer Festival (weekends through Oct. 27) with over 100 craft beers with over 20 pariable bites. The 2019 EPCOT Food and Wine Festival in Orlando, Florida, extends through Nov. 23.

  • Fairs and Festivals - Oh My!: One great thing about October is you are never at a loss of what to do on the weekends; in fact, it's just the opposite. You may have a difficult time deciding on what you want to do on a particular weekend.

With so much happening, you even can narrow your choices down by your interest.

Enjoy a carnival-like atmosphere? You are in luck because there's the Arkansas State Fair (Oct. 11-20) in Little Rock, State Fair of Texas (through Oct. 20) in Dallas and NC State Fair in Raleigh (Oct. 17-27.)

Tend to plan your weekends around eating events? If so, you want to mark your calendar for Rouge et Blanc (Oct. 12) in Lake Charles, Louisiana; National Shrimp Festival (Oct. 10-13) in Gulf Shores, Alabama; Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational BBQ (Oct. 25-26) in Lynchburg, Tennessee; and Taste of Atlanta (Oct. 18-20.)

If you are a balloon-enthusiast and you know who you are out there, don't miss the Natchez Balloon Festival (Oct. 18-20) in Natchez, Mississippi, or the Carolina BalloonFest (Oct. 18-20) in Statesville.

For the daring (or those who live vivaciously through the bold type), make your way over to Bridge Day (Oct. 19) in New River Gorge, West Virginia.

Cemeteries, like Eureka Springs (Ark.) Cemetery (Oct. 17, 25), Maple Hill Cemetery (Oct. 20) in Huntsville, Alabama, Lawrenceville (Ga.) Cemetery (every Fri. and Sat. through Oct. 31),  and Chestnut Street Cemetery (Oct. 26) in Apalachicola, Florida, offer guided tours and stories about the restless souls that occupy the spaces.

Theme parks like to play up the darkness as well. For some thrills and chills, FrightFest (dates vary depending on park) at Six Flags across the country doesn't disappoint. Wild Adventures (every Fri. and Sat. through Oct. 26) in Valdosta, Georgia, capitalizes on the scream season with Terror in the Wild. For the ultimate scare, if you dare, check out Universal Orlando's wildly popular Halloween Horror Nights (select nights through Nov. 2) Both Busch Gardens Tampa and Busch Gardens Williamsburg (VA.) offer a screeching good time with Howl-O-Scream (select nights through Nov. 2 at Tampa and Nov. 3 at Williamsburg.) Feel the hairs on the back your neck rise at SCarowinds (select Fri., Sat., and Sun. nights through Oct.27),  Carowinds', in Charlotte, North Carolina, haunted adventure.
