The Queen Bee

Havana is a small community located in Florida’s big bend area. This town is known for its quality antiques and quaint shops.  What Havana needed was a boutique to meet the needs of customized gifts and unique, locally made items. Enter the creation of The Queen Bee.

When Malissa Collins started working on opening her store, she had to come up with a name that had meaning to her.  Well she got it! Her name actually means “The Queen Bee;” and, as a mother of three boys, thought it was fitting to her life as well.

The Queen Bee offers many items that are suitable for any occasion.  Going to party? Malissa has great monogramable wine coolers, glasses and decorative stoppers for your hostess.  Do you have a baby shower to attend? There are baby bibs that can be personalized and tiny bracelets for the babies.

A unique thing about Malissa’s store is that she carries locally-created items.  A woman from Havana makes decorative magnetic boards that would be great for an entryway to put pictures on or reminders of things you have to do.  Her mother makes homemade Cinnamon Pickles (they taste like candy) and “Honey I’m Nuts About You!” spread for your toast.  Local photographers have made notecards out of photographs they have taken.

Being close to Florida State University, The Queen Bee also has a collegiate area that caters to the most popular universities in the southeast.  These are big selling items during football season and around graduation for the seniors.

Malissa has cute aprons, cookbooks, kitchen timers and homemade dipping herbs. You will find serving pieces, market totes, purses and cheese boards.  All the items are unique and not usually found in a department store.

When I asked Malissa what her most challenging aspect was of opening the store, she replied, “The most challenging thing has been to find the items my customers want in this economy.  My goal is to always provide a good product at an affordable price. I’d like to see more locals come into downtown Havana and get it back to the old hometown ways.”  The Queen Bee offers true southern hospitality from the minute you walk inside!
